Golden Dragon Acrobats Offer Family Entertainment at Columbia State Performance Series

Columbia State Community College continues its 2012-13 First Farmers Performance Series season on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. when the Golden Dragon Acrobats present their award-winning combination of acrobatics, ancient
and contemporary music, traditional dance, spectacular costumes and theatrical techniques.
“The Golden Dragon Acrobats represent the best of a time-honored tradition that began more than 25 centuries ago,” said Dr. Janet Smith, Columbia State President. “The Golden Dragons are recognized throughout the United States and abroad as the premiere Chinese acrobatic touring company of today. We believe they will appeal to audiences of all ages and hope families will mark their calendars to attend.”
Through out the history of the Golden Dragon Acrobats, the company has performed in all 50 states, including repeated performances in all 48 lower states. Annually, the Golden Dragon Acrobats present more than 200 performances at venues across the United States. The Golden Dragon troupe has separated itself from the majority of Chinese acrobatic companies touring the United States by emphasizing its artistic merit and cultural exchange, dedicating more than one third of its tour to participating in community and youth outreach programs.
The troupe’s history has spanned several generations. Lien Chi Chang, who began his acrobatic career at age 7, was performing as a young man in Wu Qiao, China, with his family’s troupe when they travelled to Taiwan in 1949. Because of civil unrest in his home country, Chang was unable to return to China. The family formed Chang’s Acrobatic Troupe and continued performing. In 1967 Chang officially established the Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats. When Chang was named head coach at the National Taiwan College of Performing Arts in 1984, his son, Danny, inherited the Golden Dragons, moving the company to the United States the following year.
